Today I’m thinking a lot about how we, as an industry, help move forward awareness of electrical safety after there is a fatality. I tweeted my thoughts and now I want to expand on them.

Today’s video is on electrical safety awareness and what I think of as the “told you so” mentality that exists after there is a fatality.

I’ve been thinking about the way our industry promotes electrical safety. When there is an incident we come out with what amounts to “I told you so, buy my thing”.

This isn’t working.

I don’t know a better way, but we have to make safety easy. Easier than the alternative.

Today I want to talk shortly about microgrid controllers and a couple of details on the equipment that can be used.

Basically, PLCs and microprocessor protection relays are VERY practical in microgrids; however they get a bad name in the startup world.

Something I don’t talk about here is how one of the business ideas that I presented to IRAP a few years ago was a universal hydro generation controller system. Basically the unique idea was that the system would have custom code and a standard panel design. I rep went along with the idea, but when it was time to start expanding they wanted me to switch to a microprocessor based design with an integrated HMI, etc.

I pushed back, I wanted to have a system that used off-the-shelf parts and systems that could be integrated into the existing utility and independent power producers workflows, something that would be relatively easy to sell and build a customer base on. They thought that putting the same algorithms into a microprocessor vs PLC was unique and worthy of funding; and the PLC was “just” engineering.

This was about the time that I stepped away from the “start-up” world and started working more with companies that are getting things done, versus making promises.

In today’s check-in I talk about the evolving structure to these videos, currently we are thinking that they will be a check-in with my plans for today, then something of value. That may be something I’ve been thinking about around the industry, or simply an update around what is coming down the pipe at the website.

I’m working to make these daily videos better and better in production quality as we go. I’m starting by working with the simpliest of workflow from my iPhone to the post, soon I will add editing and from there the sky’s the limit.

If you have any questions or suggestions about this or anything on your mind, let me know in the comments below.
